Thoughts on Peter… | Joycesarah & Jess McCabe

Peter. I think he so often gets a bad rap for sinking as he walked upon the water (Matthew 14:22-33). I, however, think he was very brave for being willing to get out of the boat and walk to Jesus. There is a great painting that is painted from Peter’s view under the water looking up towards the reaching hand of Jesus. I love that the artist painted the Savior’s face with joy in His eyes and a smile warming His gentle face. What is more amazing is that Jesus knew that this same Peter would tell lies. Peter’s courage and integrity would be found lacking. And yet, the smile. The reach. The reminder not to doubt.

If we are brave enough to get out of the boat and we start to sink, just like Peter was rescued, so too will you be. So too will I be. Our Savior has absolutely never abandoned His own and when you are His you are His forever. You will not be rejected, ditched, forsaken, or dumped. Just keep moving your feet forward and know that even if you struggle with doubt Jesus will not let you drown.

Life is scary. If I’ve learned anything over the course of this past year it’s how little control I have. My attitude, my actions, my choices, that’s about it. When I woke up this morning thinking about Peter I made several comparisons between him and me. I think everything he was ever guilty of so am I. And worse. Yet I am assured of Jesus’ love for me. I’m so grateful and so undeserving. When I really contemplate the magnitude of it all it is overwhelming.

Please be encouraged today, my friend. Please don’t condemn yourself for past mistakes, struggles, doubt. We all have those moments. When Peter’s faith faltered he immediately called out for Jesus. Scripture records Peter as yelling out, “Lord, save me!” I truly think that might be the most powerful prayer any of us ever speak.

Fear not my friend. You’ve got the nail-scarred hand forever ready to lift you to the surface.Love and peace,
